Social Inequality Campaign:
‘Who Owns the South Side?’

Redlining is the illegal, historical, and systemic practice of denying financial services—such as mortgages, insurance, or loans—to residents in specific neighborhoods based on their race, ethnicity, or demographic composition rather than creditworthiness. After the National Housing Act pf 1934, the practice was popularized and impacts Chicago neighborhoods to this day. With a series of posters, merchandise and social media marketing, the campaign was designed to bring attention to the ways that while an illegal practice, equality is difficult to enforce when the system that is designed to oppress minority groups.

The campaign name “Who Owns the South Side” came from a conversation with a South Side resident whom I had interviewed for the project. Upon hearing her remarks about homeownership and changes she has witnessed first hand in her neighborhood, it became the heart of the whole project.
